Ultrasounds

What is an ultrasound?

It is another name for a sonogram. It is a method of seeing the internal parts of your body, or your baby within your uterus, using sound waves.

Pre-abortion screening and why women get ultrasounds?

The most common reason for this examination is to help your doctor determine your baby’s due date. Also, an ultrasound checks for viability (heartbeat), and intrauterine location to rule out ectopic pregnancy.

Knowing the age of the embryo/fetus/baby is important before deciding on an abortion. The gestational age determines the abortion procedure.

The FDA currently approves the abortion pill to end a pregnancy through 10 weeks gestation (70 days or less since the first day of the last menstrual period). Complications include pregnancy tissue being left in the uterus, blood clots in the uterus, bleeding too much or for too long, infection, or an ongoing pregnancy*. Patients may need higher doses of medication and may see fleshy tissue or the embryo depending on how far along they are in the pregnancy.

How is an ultrasound performed?

There are two main methods of performing a pelvic ultrasound: abdominal and vaginal.

    • Abdominal Ultrasound: is performed by an examiner who applies a clear water-based gel to the skin to help the transducer make good contact with your body. The transducer is pressed firmly against your skin and is swept over your lower abdomen.
    • Vaginal Ultrasound: involves the insertion of the transducer into the vagina. A protective cover is placed over the transducer or wand which is then lubricated with a small amount of gel. It is then inserted into the vagina by the examiner or you may be asked to insert it as you would a tampon.

Who will be assisting you during your appointment?

We have an onsite Register Nurse assisting you during your appointment. A second worker will serve as a chaperone during a transvaginal exam.
